A developmental edit is the most big-picture edit. Here, I look at the length of your book and the way it is structured.

I get it – it's hard to perfect your own book!

Did you know that we freelance book editors also hire editors for our own texts? That is because an online editor will always see things that you are missing because you’re too close to your text. And when you’re that close to it, it can be hard to figure out whether your manuscript will have the effect on your reader you want it to have.

And that purpose is exactly where I shine. Not only will I take on the role of your reader to see where you might jump too far ahead or explain too much – but I also know how to fix these challenges!

So I would love to talk to you about what you want your manuscript to achieve, and then see how I can help it do just that.

Frequently Asked Questions

about freelance book editing

What does a freelance book editor do?

A freelance book editor will help you improve your book. But as you might have noticed, there are different kinds of editors who all focus on different things. On the whole, you can split online book editors up into two categories:

  1. The more big-picture editors such as me who offer (structural or) developmental editing and (content or) substantive editing. These freelance book editors help your book say what you want it to say by improving structure, organization, tone of voice, flow, etc.
  2. The more fine-tooth-comb editors that offer copy editing and proofreading. These editors are stars at finding the final typos or spelling and grammar mistakes.

Though we all have our own specialties, my initial statement still stands: a book editor will help you make your book better.

How much does a freelance book editor cost?

How much I charge as a book editor depends on the kind of service you want to purchase, as well as the length of your text. You can find the book editor costs here or go to this page for my full price list

Will a freelance book editor find all my mistakes?

The short answer? No, I will not find all your mistakes.

Shocking admission, right? But there’s logic to this.

First of all, you should mistrust anyone who promises that. The industry standard is that each book editor catches 95% of the leftover mistakes. That means you’ll never get to 0% mistakes!

Secondly: though I will change your grammar and sentence structures, as a big picture editor it’s not my job to catch every last typo. Instead, I will get the foundations right and help your text be effective.

Do you offer other types of editing?

I am a big-picture editor. That means I will help you make your text as effective as it can be, but I’m not your best bet for detailed-view editing. I care a lot more about arguments and story than I do about spelling errors.

As such: I do not offer copy editing or proofreading. What I do offer is the following:
