As a freelance book indexer, I usually follow a specific process.
After we have had our free meeting to discuss your vision of your book, I’ll immerse myself in your manuscript. First, I’ll read it start to finish to get a clear picture of what the book’s about, to ensure a more effective book indexing process. During the reading process, I will ask myself two questions: which concepts do you most want to communicate about, and which ideas are your readers most likely to revisit?
Based on this, I’ll start indexing in Microsoft Word. During this part of the indexing process, I’ll make sure to preserve the tone and style of your book in the index as well – including your sense of humor, and those associations that make your thinking unique. This results in a manual and tailored level of indexing that no software can get close to.
When I’ve completed the indexing process, I’ll send you your personalized book index. You can review it and together we can discuss any changes you’d like me to make before your final index delivery.
